Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with Jiayan Sun, piano

Olabode Omojola “Life of an alien" from Irin Ajo with the PVS Chorus

Béla Bartók Concerto for Orchestra

Tianhui Ng, conductor

CONCERT SPONSOR: GREENFIELD RECORDER

Concert length is approximately 2 hours with intermission.

Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is a mournful piece written in 1943 in New York. This showpiece work captures the bitter emotions of being unable to return to Hungary during WWII. Preeminent Bartók scholar Dr. David Schneider, Georges Lurcy Professor of Music & History at Amherst College, joins us at 6:30PM for the pre-concert talk.

The PVS Chorus will also join this concert for "Life of an alien," a powerfully percussive chorus from the first Nigerian opera, Irin Ajo, composed by Mount Holyoke Professor Olabode Omojola. Irin Ajo reflects on the experience of migrating from Nigeria to the US.

Pianist and Smith College faculty Jiayan Sun joins the PVSO for Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, composed as Rachmaninoff returned home to Russia after several years in Germany, on the eve of his first tour in the US. Sun last performed with the PVSO in 2019 in a memorable concert of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto.

->Due to simultaneous events happening in the area, parking may be limited in the Greenfield High School lots for Hope in a New Home with the PVS on Friday. There is additional free parking on the streets surrounding the venue, including Summer and Harrison Streets to the north and Cleveland and Shattuck Streets to the south.
