The season's finale opens with the crashing waves and defiant spirit of Ethel Smyth's Overture to The Wreckers, a rarely heard overture from one of the era's most fiercely original voices. Contralto Lucia Bradford joins the orchestra and chorus for Elgar's The Music Makers, a soaring tribute to the visionaries and dreamers who shape the world, before the program closes with the composer's best-loved orchestral work, the Enigma Variations — a gallery of musical portraits of Elgar's friends, each hiding, in the composer's words, a mystery still unsolved.
