The Pioneer Valley Symphony opens its 88th season with Louise Farrenc's crackling Overture No. 1, a rediscovered gem from a composer long overdue her place on the concert stage. Violinist Lilit Hartunian joins the orchestra for Dvořák's beautifully lyrical Violin Concerto, rich with Bohemian melody and virtuosic sparkle. The evening closes with Janáček's Sinfonietta, a blazing showcase for the orchestra's brass built from the composer's memories of a military band and the sounds of a newly independent Czechoslovakia.
